Outlaws Begin Season With a Comfortable Win Over the Greenville Griffins

The Outlaws entertained a much improved and determined Greenville side this past Saturday in a controlled scrimmage in Charleston. Both teams used the game to blood new players with the Outlaws winning comfortably in the end by a score of 35 - 5. While both coaches agreed there was much work still to be done before the opening games of the Spring Matrix, each were encouraged by the quality of the tries scored. The Outlaws have a wealth of pace as well as competition in virtually all of their key positions which bodes well for what the Outlaws hope will be a National Championship winning season in 06. Outlaws Victorious in Wilmington NC.

Congratulations to the Outlaws RFC on Saturday's wins against perennial power Cape Fear RFC. Dave Hughes had a well deserved man of the match award for his silky running and stifling defense. But the congratulations extend to both sides, A and B, for posting victories of 50-7 and 34-0 respectively. The Outlaws finally managed to put together the attractive risky rugby the coaching staff has been preaching. Nothing can be taken away from Cape Fear as they played hard-nose rugby from whistle to whistle. Thanks go to Cape Fear for two great games and the fine Southern meal at the post-game party. (Link to game report) (Link to game photos)

The Outlaws will welcome the Chattanooga RFC to Charleston (Battery Practice Fields) this weekend (2/11) for which promises to be an exciting and well contested match.

Outlaws Win Again at Home.

The Charleston Outlaws continued their winning ways with a hard fought 44-10 victory over the determined visiting Chattanooga Rugby Football Club. The Outlaw’s fought the wind and rain as much as the Chattanooga players, but the primary foe on the day were the Outlaw’s themselves. Dropped passes and sloppy deliveries contributed to the overall poor offensive flow for the vaunted Outlaw attack. At the end of the day, fine defensive plays by Chris Welsh and Zach Newton helped guide the Outlaws to another home victory. The Outlaws will look to return to form in two weeks as they travel to Knoxville TN to take on the Knoxville Possums RFC. A hearty thanks to the Chattanooga players who made the trip to Charleston and played hard both during and after the game. Outlaws Deliver Victory in Knoxville

The Charleston Outlaws took their undefeated 2006 season campaign on the road this past weekend and produced a hard-fought 17-12 victory against a Knoxville RFC in a must-win situation. Poor execution of play combined with head-scratcher officiating put the Outlaws in the unusual position of trailing for most of the game. But the Outlaws showed great heart and character in keeping the Possums out of the try zone and defeating them on their home field. The B-game proved to be an equally tough task. The stand-out, all-be-it brief, performance by Taffy ''Who Needs a Hip Anyway'' Greenslade buoyed the Outlaws to a 14-7 victory. (Link to Match Report) (Link to game photos).

With 26 traveling players and several significant others attending, the Outlaws proceeded to soil the good city of Knoxville in what had to be the greatest display of spirited debauchery since the legendary Bahamas tour of '04. On the first official Outlaw “Two-Dollar Suit Night”, the local denizens were treated to song, energetic cheer and at least one rendition of Hawaii Five-O before the wheels came completely off . Several Outlaw players were verbally scolded by the local establishments for what some would term ''Indecent'' intoxicated behavior. Fortunately, there were no arrests, only one ejection (for an apparent wardrobe malfunction...Back Ten) and only one report of an Outlaw falling clean off his barstool whilst trying to verbalize his request for 'just one more' adult beverage (KP). Such is the life of an outlaw and Outlaws. Many thanks to Knoxville RFC for playing host this past weekend. We look forward to our next meeting and the next page in the continuing saga of ''Two-Dollar Suit Night''.

Outlaws Continue Success in Spring Campaign!

On Saturday, the Charleston Outlaws continued their winning ways by upending High Country RFC 50-0. The game was dictated by the Outlaws high pressure style of play throughout the game. The entire squad should feel a deep sense of pride, as the shut-out effort is underscored by the fact that the Outlaws played a man down for most of the second half. Special consideration goes out to Bob Citrolo, who turned in a man-of-the-match performance in his first game back from baby hiatus. Congratulations and welcome back Bob. In the second match, the Charleston squad turned in a 20-5 victory against the High Country B side in a 20 minute 10 a side match. Great ball transition and player support dictated the Outlaw game plan, which saw several players with excellent play in unfamiliar positions. Notably was David Gaddie’s performance at scrum-half. (Link to match report).

The Outlaws will welcome the Cape Fear RFC to Charleston this Saturday for what always is an entertaining rugby match. Kick-off is tentatively set for 1PM at the Citadel parade deck. Please join the Outlaw’s family this Saturday, and root the team onto victory.

Charleston Wins in Cape Fear Contest

The Charleston Outlaws continued their undefeated season on Saturday with a 31-8 victory over a very game Cape Fear Rugby Club. The Cape Fear squad fell to the Outlaws 50-5 early in their Spring campaign and were determined to change their fortunes against the home Outlaws. Mis-fortune befell the visitors as the Outlaws took the field and applied their high-pressure style of rugby which exploited the gaps in the Fear defense. A sturdy and consistent pack performance was complimented by brilliant back-line plays from David Hughes and Chris Lapish. But the man of the match performance was turned in by Ernest Houston for his relentless and punishing running attack which earned him a beautiful try and set up several others. Congratulations Houston. (Link to game photos page1 page2).

The Outlaws will take next weekend off to prepare for the visiting Olde White squad in two weeks. This will be the first meeting of these two power-house Southern squads and will surely be a contested and exciting match. Make sure to reserve the afternoon of March 25th for an afternoon of great rugby.

Clash of Southern Titans Ends Outlaw's Streak

Both players and fans alike have had March 25th circled on their calendars in anticipation of the return of the Atlanta Olde White RFC. The match lived up to the pre-game hype and delivered what some spectators have said was the most exciting match they can remember. In the end the Outlaws came up short on the scoreboard of a match which was much closer than the 38-25 final. The match was exciting, extremely rough, and played by gentlemen of the sport! For both teams the match showed strengths and weaknesses which will allow both teams to fine tune their game plans for the upcoming Southern Play-offs and Championships. Thank you to the rugby fans of Charleston and Atlanta alike. And a hearty thanks to Olde White for a great match and fun post-game social. (Link to game report) (Link to game photos page1 page2).

Outlaws Advance to the USA Rugby South Championships

The Charleston Outlaws Rugby Football club has advanced to the South Championships with a 57-3 victory over the visiting Knoxville Possums. The first 20 minutes of the second meeting of these two teams played out much like the first. Hard, tough rucking and mauling, highlighted by fine defensive play from both sides. But that is where the similarities ended. The Outlaws leaned on their backline to apply relentless offensive pressure on the Knoxville defenders. A tactic which opened up defensive gaps and allowed the Outlaws to turn fine running by Ernest Houston, Chris Lapish, and David Hughes into several tries. With the defenders occupied on the wings, the loose forwards exploited the now softened middle as Bob Citrolo scored one try, and Kenny Puckett turned in a Man-of-the-Match performance with three tries. Chris Sigmund turned in a notable performance converting six of nine tries in the face of a hard crosswind. Congratulations to the Outlaws as they head into the South Championships on the heels of a superb performance. (Link to match report).

The post-match social was a social that most will remember as a great social and due to brown liquor, some will not remember at all. The traditional Man-of-the-Match awards were awarded and the recently pinched Knoxville helmet was returned to the Possum fold. Being fine sports, the Possum contingent provided a boat race rematch which allowed the Outlaws to avenge their only loss of the year with a 1 full beer margin of victory. The remainder of the evening was song, cheer, and hotly contested ''Guana-Pulls'' (won by Knoxville 2-1). Thanks to the Charleston Hurricanes WRFC for providing additional entertainment with their unusual, yet successful charity event. Thanks to the gentlemen of the Knoxville Possums for great rugby and and a great social. We look forward to our next match!

Outlaws in South Championships!

This coming Saturday April 28th, the Outlaws play Daytona in Mobile Alabama, in what will be the next leg of the Road to the National Championship. This is the second year in a row that the Outlaws, who moved up to Division Two in 2005, have advanced to this stage of the tournament. Legendary Welsh International Gareth Edwards, a recent visitor to the Outlaws training camp commented, ''What you have at this club is a tremendous amount of heart and courage. The team plays with a freedom of expression that reminds me of my days with Wales.'' Gareth was later seen down at the clubs HQ, Wild Wing, holding court with some of Charleston's finest, reminiscing about what it was like playing 'back in the day.

Road to the Final Four!

The Outlaws for the second consecutive season, advance in Div II to the Sweet Sixteen of the USA Rugby National Championships. Our next game will be in Columbia the weekend of May 13-14, where we have an opportunity to advance to the Final Four of the National Championships to be played in San Diego in June.

Playing a brand of open, exciting fifteen man attacking rugby has earned the Outlaws plaudits from around the US and as far as NZ - as one Kiwi commentator recently reported, ''the Outlaws play with a passion and flair that hopefully one day will transcend itself to the National Team.''

The Outlaws are hoping as Columbia is so close to Charleston, that their fans will turn out in large numbers to support their team. Details: Saturday 3PM KO time (field 9), Sunday 12:30PM (field 10) or 10:30AM (field 2) KO time... (Link to Directions). - Cheers!

Congratulations!

Congratulations all around this week as the Outlaws have some familiar comings and goings within the fold. Congratulations to Chris Lapish and the now Natalie Lapish as they tied the knot Saturday in the waning daylight on Folly Beach. The ceremony was followed by an enjoyable reception on the Folly Beach pier. Although there were a couple of early exits (most notably Dido and Zach), a good time was had by all! (link to photos)

Additional congratulations go out to David Hughes and his lovely wife as they welcomed their second child, Eryn Fenerty Hughes. Both Mum and daughter are doing fine. Although the official stats are unavailable, it is rumored that she is very quick, with a great boot! Congratulations Hughsie! (pic1 pic2)

Thank You Outlaws

On behalf of the coaching team - congratulations on another great season. While it would be fair to say that we did not achieve our ultimate goal - of reaching the Final Four of the USA Rugby National Championships, there is still much to be proud of. Columbia proved to be one game too many and while we lost a very hard fought semi final, we all agree that we let ourselves down in our performance.

For the fourth year in a row, the Outlaws gained the status of being one of an elite 16 best teams in the nation. Our style of play has at times been the envy of many teams and we continue to attract top quality players to our friendly club.

Coach Dave, thanks for your unrelenting support, I could not have gone through this season without you. I think I speak for the entire club when I say, 'in the future, please keep that peach vodka at home.' A special thanks to the hardworking Outlaw Executive Committee - your support and dedication to the club is very much appreciated. Thanks also to our sponsors whose deep pockets and unquestioned support has been instrumental in the success we have gained this season. Finally, a special thanks to our supporters and families who have been absolutely amazing in letting us boys have our Saturday fun.

Enjoy the summer, fall practice dates to follow.
