Outlaws Prevail in a Scrimmage Match Against a Spirited Citadel Squad

The Charleston Outlaws came away from the scheduled scrimmage against the local Citadel RFC with a 54-7 victory. John Leo and Chris ''Grandpa'' Sigmund showcased their considerable talents scoring five tries between them. The game also saw exceptional play and punishing running from first time starters David Hughes and Earnest ''Dozer'' Houston. Despite the lopsided score, every Outlaw came away from the game with a healthy respect for the strong tenacious Citadel squad. The Citadel cadets, with their ''never say die'' attitude, continued to lay physical tackles on the Outlaws until the very last whistle. Thank you Cadets for a fine day of Rugby.

October 5th

This week's game will find the Charleston Outlaws facing the Augusta Mad Dogs RFC. The key match-up of the two former Matrix rivals has a tentative kickoff time of 1:00 PM at the idyllic Citadel Parade Grounds. The weather should cooperate with a mid 70's afternoon, which should put even the most reluctant rugby fans into a frantic search for the car keys. We look forward to seeing all the Outlaw fans out there this weekend. Remember, the Citadel is a dry campus. Please respect their laws and leave the adult beverages at home.

Outlaws Gut Out Win

The Charleston Outlaws won for the second consecutive week against the Agusta Mad Dogs 45-12. Play was sloppy on both sides, yet in the end, it was the backline play of the Outlaws which weighted the scales of victory towards Charleston. A round of thanks goes to the Agusta team for coming to Charleston and giving us a tough match. (Link to game report).

October 17th

The Outlaws enjoyed their third consecutive victory on Saturday with a 21-12 score over the visiting Knoxville Possums RFC. Sharp play finally returned to the Outlaws after two sloppy yet victorious outings. With the well coached and well disciplined Possums on the pitch, the Outlaws needed the return to form to ensure a home victory. Chris ''Grandpa'' Sigmund turned in a ''Man of the Match'' performance pacing the Charleston Outlaws. The local rugby fans were then treated with two excellent matches from the combined Charleston Hurricanes, College of Charleston Women's RFC, and the visiting Knoxville Minx RFC. In the final action of the day, the Outlaws re-took the pitch for a 40 minute test match with the Coast Guard Select Side. The contest was as exciting as it was physical. In the end, the Outlaws put in one try and the Coast Guard put in one try. Ernest ''Dozer'' Houston received ''Man of the Match'' honors for both his punishing running and fearsome defense. Good luck to the Coast Guard in next weekends armed forces tournament. (Link to game report).

Away Game in Cape Fear!

This week's game will pit the Outlaws against a strong Cape Fear team in Wilmington, NC. These two matrix rivals have always turned in memorable matches and this weekends game should be more of the same. If you can make the trip to Wilmington, NC, you are assured of an entertaining day of rugby.

Incredible Come from Behind Victory in Wilmington!

Your Charleston Outlaws pulled out a brilliant come from behind victory against a very strong Cape Fear RFC. The Outlaws found themselves down 17-5 after a lackluster first half performance. At halftime, the coaching staff made the appropriate adjustments, and the Outlaws stormed back into the game. After Fear scored a quick penalty kick, the Outlaws went on to score 25 unanswered points. After Fear added a late consolation try the final score was 30-25 in favor of the Charleston Outlaws. This victory was a sight to behold and one for the ages. A very special thanks goes out to the Citadel Cadet ruggers who made the trip to fill out the roster contribute to the victory. Tis a sad day in Muddville as Mighty Casey strikes out...Twice.

The Outlaws suffered their first defeat this Fall season falling to the Georgia Rugby Union Collegiate All Stars 10-13. It was a mighty effort as Charleston played short-handed and out of position only to lose on beautiful 45m last second penalty kick. The first defeat was followed by the Outlaws second defeat at the hands of the gentlemen of the Greenville Griffins. Again, the Outlaws played short-handed and out of position. But in the end, the Griffins played with heart, executed a fine game plan, and earned a well deserved 24-14 victory. Congratulations to both teams which, and we look forward to the rematch with the Griffins in the Toys for Tots Tournament. (Link to game report).

Spence and Mobius in the spotlight!!!

For those who do not know and those who've not seen,... One of our sponsors and players have recently been spotlighted in an article in Outside Magazine. Congratulations to Spence and Mobius. Follow this link to view the article. The Outlaws entertained a much improved and determined Greenville side this
past Saturday in a controlled scrimmage in Charleston. Both teams used the
game to blood new players with the Outlaws winning comfortably in the end by
a score of 35 - 5. While both coaches agreed there was much work still to
be done before the opening games of the Spring Matrix, each were encouraged
by the quality of the tries scored. The Outlaws have a wealth of pace as
well as competition in virtually all of their key positions which bodes well
for what the Outlaws hope will be a National Championship winning season in 06.

Taffy Has Spoken!

Great practice last night - thanks for your efforts. Let make sure we come prepared to do the same on Thursday. We are going to need all players for Saturday - Hilton Head have confirmed they will be traveling with at least 20 players and will be competitive.

From a coaching standpoint, the Fall Season, while being a mixed bag both in terms of player attendance and results, has overall been successful. We have been able to play players in different positions, who normally would not have that opportunity and who in turn have played very well. The result against Cape Fear being the most pleasing, and really demonstrated the heart of the club. There are many things we as coaches have made notes on, and will be implemented as we prepare for the Spring Season and our run at the 2006 National Championships.

As this is the last official game of the Fall Season, it would be great to have a large turnout at the game either ready to play or simply to support the club and those players who have made the effort this Fall. Party to follow at the Brick with awards - everyone has plenty of time to get that Saturday pass from the lady in doors, in order to tie a few on after the game and end the season in true Outlaw fashion. Dave and I will be on the beers with a vengeance - that's official.

Think about what you will miss if you decide not to join us on Saturday.

1. Clarky and Welsh playing together as though their lives depended on it, instead of trying to beat the shit out of each other at practice!

2. Houston, steam rolling over anything and anyone who gets in his way - including himself

3. Houston and Shark packing over 800 pounds of holy hell in the center!

4. Butch's last game - before he gets his surgery that will physically remove both his feet - he claims he will be fitter and faster in the Spring only if he can cut down on his Bud intake!

5. Rick Cutlip - actually being able to play for 80 minutes

6. Jeff and Lapish holding hands on the pitch as a sign that their hand bags adventure was nothing

7. Jaimey taking the hammers, and on his own

8. Kelly playing in 20 different positions, with only 6 of them being on the pitch!

9. Skip and Round-Eye refusing to play sober

10. John Leo actually passing the ball wide - way to go John

11. Dave and Taffy trying to figure out what the hell each of us is saying to each other....

12. The ball has to go, the ball has to go....

13. What tackle area?

Thursday 7pm sharp... That is all. - Taffy!

No Practice This Week....

The Outlaws returned to their winning ways this past weekend defeating a spirited Hilton Head/Savannah combined side to the tune of 87-17. Greg Mills and Jamie Sherlock turned in Man-of-the-Match performances, but the song of the day was teamwork. Every Outlaw on the field contributed to the Victory which will be a springboard for a successful Spring season. (Link to game report).

Charleston Outlaws Victorious at Toys for Tots Tournament.

The Outlaws finished the Fall 2005 campaign in winning fashion at the Toys for Tots Tournament by posting two sound victories and taking top honors in the annual event. The first match pitted the Outlaws against the local College of Charleston Men's team. The Cougars played spirited rugby, but the constant attack of the Outlaws proved too much, and the Outlaws won handedly 57-7. In the second match, the Outlaws faced a well coached, finely conditioned Citadel club. Again it was the high pressure defense and constant attack offense from the Outlaws which carried the day and earned them a victory to the tune of 56-7. The high flying offense of the Outlaws bodes well for the coming Spring season as the Charleston Outlaws Rugby Football team sets out on their quest to bring the National Championship home to Charleston. (Link to game report).
