Baboquivari - Southeast Arete III 5.6

Baboquivari Peak rises sharply from the Arizona desert to dominate a spectacular portion of the east side of the Baboquivari Range. Close to the border of Mexico, this is an area of desert drama and scenic landscapes. Baboquivari is unique in many respects - it is shrouded in Native Indian legends and is one of the few major peaks in Arizona requiring technical climbing ability to reach the summit, a popular attraction for rock climbers. Elevations range from 7,730 feet on the summit to 4,500 feet on the desert floor below. Vegetation in the higher elevations is oak, walnut and pinyon with saguaro, paloverde and chaparral communities down lower.

The Southeast Arete is the most climbed fifth class route on the peak with good rock and plenty of fun climbing and some fantastic exposure. With an overall grade of 5.6, the route can be climbed in up to 7 pitches. The descent involves some roped down climbing and a short rappel. The peak can either be climbed in one long day from the campground on the west side, or an overnight camp can be made higher up the approach trail requiring two days.
