James Sansing is a sculptor who is interested in the ways in which evidence left by human beings become integrated back into nature, seamlessly and without fail. His work explores the point at which nature has infiltrated the relics left by people but has not yet removed their evidence completely. Sansing’s detailed sculptures are altered according to the viewers’ presence: a person’s breath or footsteps effect shifting elements of the pieces, such as ash, leaves, or dirt.

James Sansing has exhibited at the Roxie Theater, San Francisco, CA; Falkirk Arts and Cultural Center, San Rafael, CA; and the Milania Basarab Gallery, London/San Francisco, CA. He has received the Marin Arts Council Visual Arts Studio Award at the Headlands Center for the Arts, 2005; the Marin Arts Council Grant In Photography, 1998; the Princess Grace Foundation North America Honorarium for Experimental Film, 1994; and the Eastman Kodak Motion Picture Film Grant, 1993. He received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
