McCready | if i just eat
them all i won't have to think about them | mixed media [2005]
Reconstructed
in detail, stands the kitchen cabinet and perpetually stocked candy
dish of M&Ms that has been a permanent fixture in the artist’s
life. McCready describes how during her visits home, the bottomless
bowl “stares at me…and I cannot help but eat every single
one thinking if they are gone and out of sight I will not have to
worry about them anymore.” Her mother’s unspoken, habitual
action is to promptly refill the bowl with a bag of holiday M&Ms
she bought on sale months earlier. A cycle of compulsion to eat
and refill exists for them, both McCready and her mother subject
to the temptation of ‘you can have it all’. This phrase
is divided and printed on customized pink and gold M&Ms, which
McCready has made available for exhibition visitors to munch on,
along with postcards detailing the numerous variations offered by
the manufacturers.
