This title, Crystal Seeds, refers to the tiny, perfectly formed crystals of ‘dogtooth’ calcite that have spontaneously grown on the rugged buttresses of a sand dollar spine, which is also a creation in calcite. Overall, the image is a wonderful study of contrasts, between the beautifully simple crystals grown by physical processes, and the complex, functional spine grown under biological control.
The field of view across this image is about 60 micrometers, or about 0.06mm, so an 18” x 24” print would be enlarged over 10,000 times.
We elected to tint the crystals a different color than the spine, to point up their different origins---one a biological construct and the other purely physical---but kept both colors muted to prevent detraction from the beauty of their forms.
