Living Proof Summer Tour Service
[in conjunction with Red76 and The Kitchen]

In preparation for the tour, I asked members of the Chelsea community in New York to draw me maps of their favorite places in the neighborhood. These maps were then included in the self-guided tour booklet.

"Cities are constructed out of the activities of countless parallel communities; governmental, commercial, familial, residential, etc. At times these communal avenues cross paths, others take years, even generations, to intersect. Chelsea - though known for its galleries and art market, bringing in for itself huge cash flow - is as varied an area as many in Manhattan, with varying levels of economic and social distinction. Sometimes this is hard to notice; one road rises higher than the rest, leaving the others to form an underground highway system, unseen, but supporting traffic of all sorts beneath its surface. Without these varied avenues of action you'd find streets and buildings devoid of nuance, leaving the area nothing but an empty shell, blood-drained and lifeless.

On Friday, July 28th, in an effort to reveal these parallel communities, please join Red76 and the participants of The Kitchen's Summer Institute for the Living Proof Summer Tour Service.
Focusing on the boundaries of the West Side Highway to 8th Ave. and 19th Street to 23rd Street, the Living Proof Summer Tour Service will introduce you to aspects of the area you may not have noticed before. Join one of our convivial tour-guides as they introduce you to mysterious disused lots, spanish nunneries, fish mongers, marble artisans, "the worlds best cupcakes", and possibly a cat named Max who owns his own garden, among so much more. As well, free copies of our self-guided tour booklet will be available, consisting of maps guiding you to significant locations in the area culled from the recollections of area residents and workers."

The Tour occurred on Friday, July 28th between 2 - 4:30pm.
