The Great X-Cape

This ultralight poncho / tarp system was designed specifically for those gram weenies who want the most gear for their gram. Weighing only 9 ounces, it can be used as a poncho or a shelter.

As a shelter, the hood becomes the front overhang (beak). It is shown set up with one hiking pole, which has been guyed forward. Numerous stakes hold the hem to the ground. The height here is approximately 48 inches. It can be suspended from a branch using the hanging loop. With all tarps, interior space varies with pitch. Loops have been placed along all edges to provide various draping possibilities, along with door or floor additions. There are also ultralight clips placed in key loops for securing various gear items.

When used as a poncho, the hood has a drawcord, which allows it to be tightened under the chin. The poncho drapes back over the pack. Then, bringing this cape around to the front, the ends can be rolled up and tucked into the hip belt. There are no side seams to permit rain to enter. Configurations may vary according to weather, personal preference, individual height, and creativity.

Used as a poncho with a 5 foot, 2 inch person.

A silnylon stuff sack, which has its own drawcord, has been sewn onto the front edge (near shoulder height), and this allows the stuff sack to be used as a pocket while hiking. This stuff sack can be used as a "gear stash" when the Great X-Cape is set up as a shelter. Since the sack is permanently attached, it can't get lost.
