Although the news about Natalie is heartbreaking, it has been very encouraging to see the outpouring of support for Natalie, Chris, and the kids. As Taffy & Dave always say, there is something special about wearing the Charleston Outlaw Jersey, and we are a Strong Family! We hope this same strength and support will aid them in their time of need, and provide the encouragement and blessings that will help them pull through.

In an effort to alleviate the stresses they are going through, we will be sending some gifts for the kids, but our main focus for the next couple weeks is to gather together and raise money for Chris and Natalie. This will come in the form of passing the hat at practice and any gathering of the team over the next couple weeks, and by setting up the Pay-Pal account on the web site for this purpose.

This is the season of giving thanks for what we have and what we have been given, and for giving what we can to those who need it. Please do what you can to support some great members of the Charleston Rugby Family.

Spring Season 

Time to bring out the boots and begin working off the Xmas turkey. Home Rugby this Weekend! - 2/2/2010 

MATRIX PLAY CONTINUES!

This Saturday, your Charleston Outlaws will kick off Spring Matrix play and the 2010 Spring Season against the visiting instate rival Columbia Olde Grey RFC. The Outlaws carry over a perfect 2-nil record from the Fall Matrix campaign defeating both Cape Fear and Columbia. This match should be a hard fought as Columbia looks to get back into the Matrix hunt and avenge a 33-11 home drubbing at the hands of the Charleston squad.

All the action will be on the John's Island pitch (directions). The A-side Columbia match has a 1PM kickoff followed immediately by a The Charleston B-side facing the Savannah A-side! Get there early to make sure you don't miss a second of an exciting day of Charleston Rugby!

Outlaws Move to 4-0 


Augusta 5 - Outlaws 22
Charlotte 12 - Outlaws 25

This past weekend in Charlotte we moved to 4 - 0 with all games won on the road. A tremendous start to the 2010 season.

The game in Augusta (the only matrix game that survived the weather) was played on a wet and snow covered field, conditions akin to the UK. A typical forwards game dominated proceedings, where despite 3 yellow cards the Outlaws came away victorious thanks to the individual brilliance of Chubby who single handed carved the Augusta defense to shreds.

The win in Charlotte said so much about our character, who we are and showed in patches what we are capable of producing when you have 15 players all on the same page. Charlotte provided a resolute challenge and to come away with an impressive victory will no doubt stand us in good stead for the weeks to come which as we all know are going to be very tough.

Many players held their hands up for man of the match including Butch, Bob, Johnny, Ty, Zac and Brian - the best forward going to Zac and Brian for best back respectively. Next up in 2 weeks is the rescheduled match with Columbia - a must win for both clubs. Should be a cracker!

Midseason Report 

CHARLESTON RUGBY MIDSEASON UPDATE:

While most clubs are drudging through this wet, prolonged winter, trying where possible to get a game in, The Charleston Rugby Outlaws are enjoying our four victories as we set our sights on winning their matrix outright. The remaining schedule includes taking on the competition at the home pitch the next 3 matches and, if all goes to plan, for the south Quarterfinals on April 10, as the hosts of the South Championship on May 1st & 2nd, and ultimately advancing to the National Tournament in Columbia on May 22 & 23.

This road will not come easy- as the Outlaws started this season with 4 victories on the road- taking on Columbia and Cape Fear in the Fall -which allowed us to close the year out with solid victories and more room in the spring. The toughest opponent for all ruggers in 2010 has to be Mother Nature- the weather was not on anyone's side during the month of February, as the Columbia home match was forced into a reschedule (despite the vast efforts of the Charleston club- who moved tons of water from the pitch, filled holes with sand, and shifted muck with pitchforks and spare tires) The following week, the outlook looked worse, as the lowcountry woke to a blanket of snow, the Outlaws headed up the pike and fortunately- game on! Charleston defeated the Mad Dogs of Augusta in a 22-5 victory, played in 4'' of the white stuff- it wasn't a pretty victory, but given the conditions and the determination of both teams to make the game happen, a deserved win for the spirit of the sport. Consistent rains forced the team to practice at the Citadel's gymnasium and all-weather turf field (Thanks to Major Bill Bell)- a good reminder that we can make something happen, make the most of what we do have, even when the options are few.

But now the skies seem to be clearing, allowing us to refocus on the path ahead. Our success will only go as far as our hearts and determination will take us. The Charleston Club knows there is target on their chest, and defeating the remaining opponents is not our only goal, but just a step on the path to success- as soon as we step out of our matrix, it will be up to us to show the South and the US that the Charleston Club deserves to be there. The upcoming matches must be used to improve our play to compete at a much higher level than ever before.

RUGBY THIS WEEKND!
Charleston will be taking on Columbia on March 6th- always a great match to watch. The Charleston B side will face Myrtle Beach also on March 6 following the Columbia bout. The club will head down to Savannah the following week to enjoy the St. Paddy's festivities, while competing for the open division title. We will finish out March with home matrix matches against Greenville and Cape Fear and then to playoffs!

If you are a player for the Outlaws, the rest of this season will be the gut check, the heart check, to see if you can be a part of taking the club to a higher level. If you are a past player/old boy or a fan, support the club in any way you can- the next 3 months are going to be some of the most exciting times in the club's history- either way- come be a part of it!

OUTLAWS ROUT COLUMBIA 54 - 29 TO REMAIN UNBEATEN! 

On what was a perfect day for rugby, the Outlaws moved to 5-0 with a comprehensive win over in-state rival Columbia Old Grey. Scoring 40 plus points in the first half, the outlaws eased up in the second half and paid for it, as Old Grey clawed their way to respectability. Outlaws Assistant Coach, Dave Hawkins summed up the mood of the coaches by commenting, ''it could have been 100 points today, but we took our foot off the gas and allowed Columbia back into the game. We must remain focused for the full 80 minutes, anything less will punish us as we play better teams who will be much better organized and much fitter.''

Outlaws Move to 6-0 

Hard Fought Victory Over Greenville 30 - 8

Congratulations to everyone associated with the club on another fine win. It is no small feat to go 6 games unbeaten but both coaches believe that our full potential has not yet been realized. For all the games we have played to date the score count could have been higher, it's like opening a bottle of wine and only sniffing the cork, the good stuff is inside the bottle waiting to be tasted, that's how we are, the good stuff for a full 80 minutes has not yet been released. At the moment we are a big boat on a small lake, in a few weeks we sail the ocean, the success of the cruise is in the preparation. We need to get it right and all be aboard. Let's not be like Gilligan!

Enough of the metaphors, we need to get it right. This coming Saturday we play a surging Cape Fear, with the prize awaiting the winner of a spot in the South quarter finals. Once again, we ask the Outlaw family to come out and support us.

Playoff Rugby this Weekend! 

The Charleston Outlaws Rugby team will be taking on the Jacksonville Ospreys Saturday April 10th at Hampton Park in the Quarterfinals of the USA Rugby South playoffs at 1PM. Charleston comes in undefeated (7-0) in the East Division and Jacksonville has a record of 7-2 in the South Division. Jacksonville is a large team that likes to pound the ball. Charleston, featuring Captain Jake Fraser and leading scorer Chris Sigmund, is a fast team that likes to spread the field. Winner will advance to the South final 4, which will be held in Charleston. Outlaws Win 49-21! 

Outlaws Advance to the Southern Championships with a 49 - 21 WIN over Jacksonville

Congratulations to everyone at the club for a fine win against a very determined and physical Jacksonville team this past weekend. ''The victory is a compliment to everyone in the club, not just the squad who played on the day'' quoted Taffy Greenslade, Head Coach.

The victory reverses the narrow loss the Outlaws received back in 2008 during the Southern Championship Final, played in Jacksonville. The focus now switches to the New Orleans Rugby Club, whom the Outlaws meet in the Southern Championship semifinals, to be played on the weekend of May 1st and May 2nd, in the Holy City of Charleston, Ansonbourgh Fields downtown, next to the Aquarium. Outlaws Lose in South Semi-Finals 

Outlaws End Season with a Heartbreak Loss to New Orleans in Southern Semi-Finals

While it was most ceratinly not the rezult we wanted, on the day New Orleans held on for a deserved victory. For some clubs a 11-1 season would be an achievement and one to be proud of. For us coaches and players we all know what could and should have been and therefore the record is a bitter sweet one. Yes, we have a great deal to be proud of in a season when at times we played some amazing open and attacking rugby. However, we failed to reach our potential and in a game as important as the New Orleans game was, we all agree that we let both ourselves and our dedicated fans down.

On behalf of the coaches, we would like to thank all of the players for their hard work, the Executive committee for their tireless work behind the scenes, the field team, the social team, sponsorship team, vice President and President, webmaster and the countless number of others who helped out over the course of a long season. Most importantly, we want to thank the sponsors and fans who without your support the club would not be where it is today. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing everyone at or annual MEMORIAL SEVENS!
